Data driven labour market portal at Randstad groep

UX Challenge: Transform the large amount of market data into a user friendly, result driven application for consultants as well as the employer end-client. 

BI Challenge:
Define the value proposition between consultants and end-clients. Combine with interviews outcome and actual usage data to improve the use of the Labour Market Portal.

In this project I did an instant deep-dive into the world of candidate placement by Randstad group consultants. Interviewing the app users (consultants) and end-clients(employers) mapping out the value proposition. What are we, as the Randstad groep, offering versus what the customer has on their to-do list. 




  • Clients and consultants are very interested in understanding and getting informed by actual actionable market data. 
  • The app was initiated by management and developed with almost no users involved before or during development. 
  • The app is hardly being used on a daily basis.
  • Hard to understand interface, slow and works badly on mobile while that is the prefered point of access.
  • Unclear vision of the labour market portal. (what makes it into a success?)
  • Unexpected: A lot of upsell of Randstad services by experienced consultants which is not represented in the app. 


Randstad needs to enable employers to find suitable candidates faster and better with action oriented insights based on data.

I quickly realised that consultants can benefit a lot from the available data. We only need to listen to their actual needs in stead of providing them with theoretical look-what-we-can-do widgets. They need to be motivated to use the app. It should offer actual hands on value in their busy high volume selling daily work. They need to be constantly involved in the build of an app that they need to use. Constant user testing and a clear vision statement or manifesto needs to be developed to get the team involved. 

And last but not least, we need to make very clear what makes this app a success? Decide on what metrics will show us we are going in the right direction. 


Based on the previous interviews we started to brainstorm as many ideas as we could. Without immediately deciding if they are realistic or not.

Extreme users

During ideation you have to think about the extremes to be sure you cover the whole spectrum. On the one end there are experts who allready push the currently used Tableau (data visualisation) to its limits and there are the newbies who see the app for the first time. How are both of this users going to benefit or get exited to use this application.  



Because during ideation we made a lot of ideas for new widgets in the application we could now choose (converge after diverge) what ideas are most simple to execute.


Flowcharts seem extra work but are invaluable when discussing the functionality of the application later on with the developers.

Rapid prototyping

Build in order to think. Gather feedback from stakeholders and everyone involved. All the designs were uploaded to Invision and made clickable to make all the interaction as clear as possible during planning. 

We also did user testing in the impressive UX lab that is available in the Randstad Groep.
